This J1650 Carolina Skiff Kit boat was built for the University of North Carolina at Wilmington's CREST Research Park Shellfish Hatchery Division. It is powered by a lightweight, versatile and quiet Yamaha 4-stroke 40hp Jet driven outboard. This engine is propeller-free and powerful, and boldly goes where no conventional outboard would dare. Skinnies. Shallows. Rocky-bottom rivers. Sandbars. Shoals. Rapids. They’d all prove treacherous for a propeller driven outboard, but a jet drive is all over it! UNCW's Shellfish Research Hatchery is an 11,000-square-foot facility on the CREST campus that provides researchers a laboratory to study oysters and other North Carolina shellfish species.
